Canon Source: Clover
Canon Format: Manga
Character's Name: Oruha (no surname given)
Character's Age: mid-twenties
Character's Canon Abilities:
Oruha is a one-leaf Clover (please see below for an explanation of what `Clovers` are) whose only ability was to be able to predict the time of her death - not how or why or even where, but simply when. However, as I'll be taking her post-death, she'd no longer have this power in game.
Besides that, Oruha’s a normal young woman whose main talent is in singing. She has a lovely voice, and it was mentioned that she could have been famous (if only she hadn’t died so early).
Character History: 01 || 02
In Oruha’s world, children born with magical powers - sorcerers – were called “Clovers” and were gathered and classified by the government according to the strength of their abilities. The ones deemed "one-leafs" were the weakest, while only the four-leaf was the strongest with abilities even the most powerful psychics couldn’t contain. (Psychics are, according to the canon, apparently different from the Clovers somehow, though this isn't something expounded on in length.)
Oruha was a one-leaf Clover. As with the other Clovers, she was taken in by the government, which then performed experiments on her to gain more insight into her abilities. Since she was just a one-leaf, one whose powers weren’t very useful – that is, the ability to know when she would die – she was branded with a clover tattoo on her chest and just sent home.
Years passed, and Oruha found work as a singer in a small bar. It's there that she meets a soldier named Kazuhiko, who she takes on as a lover after a three month courtship.
More time passed, and eventually, Oruha’s songs reached Suu, the only four-leaf Clover in existence. Suu had always been alone as the government feared that if she found someone to love, that person would be able to use her powers for their own gain. Despite this, Suu makes contact with Oruha by “calling” her on the phone, and while Oruha is understandably wary at first, the two strike up a friendship and become close, even writing and singing a song together.
It's her friendship with Suu that prompts the government into arranging Oruha’s death. On her birthday, Oruha explains matters to Suu and walks to the stage, knowing she's about to die. Up on stage, after she finishes her song, she is shot by an assassin and killed.
Character Personality:
Oruha’s ability to predict when she will die colors a lot of how she's portrayed in the series. There’s a mixture of sadness and wistfulness in her interactions with others, most especially with her lover Kazuhiko, which is later revealed to be due to the fact that she loves him so much and doesn’t want to leave him.
She tells Suu, right before she goes on stage and is killed, that she hated knowing that she was forever “running out of time” and that she thought she “could never pour [herself] into anything” due to this. She was proven wrong when it came to singing and to being with Kazuhiko though, as both of these made her extremely happy.
Her songs show a lot of her inner thoughts as well as her love for Kazuhiko, most especially `Clover`, the song she wrote together with Suu. “I wish for happiness. I seek happiness, to find happiness with you… to be your happiness.” Her dearest wish is to be able to make Kazuhiko happy and, in turn, be happy with him, and it breaks her heart knowing that this is one wish she can't fulfill because of her fate.
She even says to Kazuhiko in one of their moments together that “to not die is the greatest gift you can give someone you love,” and Kazuhiko - thinking she meant that she feared him dying - reassures her that “I’m strong,” to which Oruha only smiles sadly.
Despite all this, Oruha is still a person brimming with love and life. She’s a kind person who loves to smile and to tease the people around her, playful and affectionate as she is. She tries to make the most of the time she has left and tries to share the happiness she has found with others. As Suu describes her, Oruha is a gentle and beautiful person.
Charming and charismatic, she’s a consummate performer who wants to share her songs with the world and be seen as the best. In her own words, when she’s on stage, she’s like an actress playing roles depending on the songs she sings.
Oruha is a woman who’s aware of her looks and is unafraid of her own sensuality and femininity. She loves to wear tastefully revealing dresses which accentuate her curves, and carries herself with quiet confidence at all times.
She can also be a bit shameless at times – such as when she greets Gingetsu, Kazuhiko’s commander, with a kiss on the cheek when Kazuhiko first introduces them though, of course, she kisses Kazuhiko full on the lips afterward so he won’t get jealous. Once, she even goes as far as having a tryst with Kazuhiko backstage though she still had a show to continue after. However, that doesn’t mean that Oruha’s crass or crude - she still remains elegant and lady-like at all times, and she makes it clear that her flirting is all in good fun; she’s not the kind of person to lead others on.
The fact that she became friends with Suu despite never having met her face to face shows just how open and accepting she is. She set aside her initial trepidation which stemmed from the fact she had no clue how Suu had found her home number or even who the younger girl was. She never once pushed Suu for answers regarding these matters, even assuring her that `Everyone has their secrets`. Another example of this is the fact that Oruha didn’t even bat an eyelash when she learns of Ran’s and Gingetsu’s relationship despite the apparent difference in their ages.
On the other hand, this overly accepting attitude can almost be considered a flaw at times – she accepts things so easily that one of her main weaknesses is her passivity.
Growing up with the knowledge of when she would die, she simply accepts it as a fact and makes no move to try and see beyond this. One could almost say it's all she sees. Despite her love for Kazuhiko and for all the friends she knew she'd be leaving behind, she doesn't try and change her destiny and inevitable death, instead walking right into it.
However, she's still sympathetic and considerate of those around her, and is perhaps the first to touch Suu’s heart. She acknowledges Suu’s loneliness and tells the younger girl that she hopes that Suu will find out what it means to be happy someday, wishing they could have met so that she could have held her and sung with her. In the end, with her gentle words and tragic death, Oruha is the one who inspires Suu to leave her `cage` in search of her own happiness, thus becoming the catalyst of the rest of the events in the series.
